“Memory is a great artist. For every man and for every woman it makes the recollection of his or her life a work of art and an unfaithful record.” - Andre Maurois. Jay Wilkisnon’s work is an exploration of memory and how it is deceptive yet foundational to every human life. Memory is the construction of the self and, besides the present moment you are reading this, the only true thing that actually exists as “you”. It is a complex tool that collects experiences and the emotional memory of experiences and assembles them into identity. With that in mind Wilkinson uses figurative and representational imagery to construct abstract “memories” in an effort to understand how our perception of our past dictates our future. Jay Wilkinson attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He Moved to Fort Worth 12 years ago and has gone on to have an accomplished career. He founded Bobby on Drums art collective and gallery, cofounded Art Tooth, an emerging artist community organization, and owned and operated Dang Good Candy: studio/gallery in Sundance Square. He has received artist of the year in FW Weekly, Fort Worth Magazine, and Dallas Observer multiple years in a row, and has been awarded many residencies including Art South and Sundance Square.
